THE FULL STORY

KRAFTGANGA FOR 30 YEARS

Our journey began in 1996, when Árný Helgadóttir founded Kraftganga — a licensed travel agency with a heart for movement, wellness, and deep connection to nature. From the very beginning, Kraftganga was about more than just hiking. It was about encouraging people to step outside, breathe deeply, and find joy in the Icelandic landscape.

For nearly 30 years, Árný has led power walking classes twice a week at the Perlan monument in Reykjavík — a ritual that’s become a cherished tradition for many. She also brings decades of experience guiding hiking tours across Iceland, Scotland, and Norway, and was awarded the prestigious NATA grant to develop sustainable travel in Greenland.

At our family farm, Hvassafell, Árný has welcomed guests for over a decade, sharing the simple, healing beauty of life with animals, fresh air, and wide skies.

As we open our arms to guests from abroad, we’ve chosen to use the name Rest in the West — a phrase that captures exactly what we offer: a restful, rejuvenating Icelandic experience, full of warmth, animals, and honest connection.

MISSION & VISION

We want to offer people more than just a vacation — we want to offer them a sense of peace.

Here in our beautiful home country of Iceland, life moves at a gentler pace. The open skies, the quiet hills, the warmth of wool and the company of animals — it all invites you to slow down and simply be.

We feel incredibly lucky to live on a small farm where nature is part of our every day. It brings us peace, clarity, and joy — and we believe that’s something worth sharing. Especially with those who come from big cities, busy lives, and long days spent surrounded by concrete.

Our mission is to help our guests breathe deeply, reconnect, and discover the quiet wonder of Iceland, in all its raw beauty. Whether it's through cuddling a lamb, walking barefoot in the grass, or sipping coffee in the stillness of a summer evening — we’re here to make space for rest, reflection, and real joy

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Here at Rest in the West, sustainability isn’t a policy — it’s a way of life.
When you live close to the land, you learn to move gently, take only what you need, and care for everything around you. This is how we live on our farm, and it’s how we guide our guests through Iceland.

We believe it is both a privilege and a responsibility to call this country home. That’s why we’re committed to preserving its beauty, protecting its ecosystems, and honoring its traditions — so that future generations can enjoy it too.

How We Care for Nature, Culture, and Community

1. We stay close to home.
We focus on local and low-impact tours to reduce emissions. Our guests often discover that the most beautiful places are just around the corner.

2. We embrace the slow path.
We promote slow tourism — guiding travelers to less-frequented areas to relieve pressure on fragile destinations, and to create deeper, more personal experiences.

3. We leave no trace.
We teach and practice Leave No Trace principles. That means no litter, no damage, no shortcuts through moss or meadows — only footprints that disappear with the wind.

4. We sort, recycle, and reuse.
We recycle all waste at our farm — both our own and our guests’. We also repair and reuse what we can, instead of buying new. It’s an old Icelandic habit we’re proud to continue.

5. We eat with intention.
Our meals are simple, homecooked, and rooted in Icelandic tradition — from lamb soup to pancakes. We avoid waste, honor every ingredient, and source locally whenever possible.

6. We support our neighbors.
We believe a thriving countryside depends on local connection. That’s why we partner with other small businesses — from farmers and restaurants to independent guides and artisans.

7. We care for our animals.
Our horses and sheep are not “part of the experience” — they’re part of our family. We raise them with love, patience, and respect. Their wellbeing always comes first.

8. We share our traditions.
Cultural sustainability matters just as much as environmental. Whether it’s a song from Elly Vilhjálms, a hand-knitted lopapeysa, or a pancake flipped in the farmhouse kitchen — we believe sharing Iceland’s heritage keeps it alive.

9. We welcome guest responsibility.
We gently educate guests on how to move respectfully through Iceland’s landscapes. Many are surprised to learn how fragile our moss is — and grateful to learn how to help protect it.

10. We invite carbon awareness.
We minimize unnecessary driving — and invite guests to consider supporting Icelandic reforestation through organizations like Kolvið. Even small acts matter.

A Promise to Walk Gently

We don’t aim to be perfect — but we do aim to be thoughtful.
To live and work in a way that respects what we have, honors where we are, and invites others to do the same.

When you travel with us, you're not just seeing Iceland — you're helping to care for it.
