SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Here at Rest in the West, sustainability isn’t a policy — it’s a way of life.
When you live close to the land, you learn to move gently, take only what you need, and care for everything around you. This is how we live on our farm, and it’s how we guide our guests through Iceland.
We believe it is both a privilege and a responsibility to call this country home. That’s why we’re committed to preserving its beauty, protecting its ecosystems, and honoring its traditions — so that future generations can enjoy it too.
How We Care for Nature, Culture, and Community
1. We stay close to home.
We focus on local and low-impact tours to reduce emissions. Our guests often discover that the most beautiful places are just around the corner.
2. We embrace the slow path.
We promote slow tourism — guiding travelers to less-frequented areas to relieve pressure on fragile destinations, and to create deeper, more personal experiences.
3. We leave no trace.
We teach and practice Leave No Trace principles. That means no litter, no damage, no shortcuts through moss or meadows — only footprints that disappear with the wind.
4. We sort, recycle, and reuse.
We recycle all waste at our farm — both our own and our guests’. We also repair and reuse what we can, instead of buying new. It’s an old Icelandic habit we’re proud to continue.
5. We eat with intention.
Our meals are simple, homecooked, and rooted in Icelandic tradition — from lamb soup to pancakes. We avoid waste, honor every ingredient, and source locally whenever possible.
6. We support our neighbors.
We believe a thriving countryside depends on local connection. That’s why we partner with other small businesses — from farmers and restaurants to independent guides and artisans.
7. We care for our animals.
Our horses and sheep are not “part of the experience” — they’re part of our family. We raise them with love, patience, and respect. Their wellbeing always comes first.
8. We share our traditions.
Cultural sustainability matters just as much as environmental. Whether it’s a song from Elly Vilhjálms, a hand-knitted lopapeysa, or a pancake flipped in the farmhouse kitchen — we believe sharing Iceland’s heritage keeps it alive.
9. We welcome guest responsibility.
We gently educate guests on how to move respectfully through Iceland’s landscapes. Many are surprised to learn how fragile our moss is — and grateful to learn how to help protect it.
10. We invite carbon awareness.
We minimize unnecessary driving — and invite guests to consider supporting Icelandic reforestation through organizations like Kolvið. Even small acts matter.
A Promise to Walk Gently
We don’t aim to be perfect — but we do aim to be thoughtful.
To live and work in a way that respects what we have, honors where we are, and invites others to do the same.
When you travel with us, you're not just seeing Iceland — you're helping to care for it.
